Housing Stakeholders Work in Partnership at Affordable Housing Forum

LONDON, Ontario, September 28, 2005 — More than one hundred housing experts and providers from across Ontario are gathered in London today to share best practices with the goal of working with community members towards the development of affordable housing and homelessness services.

Working in partnership, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, Ontario Municipal Social Services Association, Ontario Association of Hostels, and the City of London, organized and co-hosted a one-day forum, which also includes community partners.

"By working cooperatively with our community partners and all levels of government, we can ensure Canadians can have a safe, affordable place to call home," said the Honourable Joe Fontana, Minister of Labour and Housing and Member of Parliament for London North Centre. "Today’s forum is an excellent opportunity to share ideas and best practices as we look towards future developments in affordable housing and homelessness services at the community level."

Today’s forum was held to promote the concepts of partnership, capacity building and tools, as principal elements in successful affordable housing development and provision of homelessness services. The 2005 Showcase will also feature national award-winning projects and provide excellent opportunities for Ontario housing partners to discuss opportunities, share best practices, and introduce a number of initiatives.

Under the new Canada–Ontario Affordable Housing agreement, signed on April 29, 2005, the two levels of government have committed $301 million towards the creation of affordable housing in Ontario. With this commitment, the federal, provincial and municipal governments will have invested at least $734 million over the life of the Canada–Ontario Affordable Housing Program, to assist some 20,000 Ontario households
