Prescott Celebrates Official Opening of Affordable Rental Units

PRESCOTT, Ontario, October 28, 2005 — The Prescott community came together today to celebrate the official opening of four new affordable rental units. The Mayor, town councillors, citizens and local trades' people, attended the ceremony to mark the official re-opening of the Keilty Brothers building, which has under gone year-long renovations.

The project received $96,000 in funding through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's (CMHC) Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP) and $2,500 in private funds.

"The Government of Canada is committed to providing affordable housing to those in our communities who are most in need," said the Honourable Joe Fontana, Minister of Labour and Housing. "I extend my congratulations to all those who worked so very hard to ensure the successful renovation of these affordable housing units for Prescott."

"Affordable housing is a priority for the Government of Canada and we are very pleased that our partnership with the province and the City is helping more people to have access to a quality and affordable housing," said the Honourable Mauril Bélanger, Minister of Internal Trade, Deputy Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Member of Parliament for Ottawa–Vanier.

"The units were in a serious state of neglect and required major repairs to bring the building up to a minimum level of health and safety," said Ana Maria Rutenberg, co-owner of the Keilty Brothers building. "The repairs were made possible through the support of CMHC and we wish to express our thanks to all who helped make this project possible."

CMHC's Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP) helps low-income households and landlords make necessary repairs to bring their properties up to minimum health and safety standards.

CMHC is Canada's national housing agency with a mandate to help Canadians gain access to safe, quality and affordable housing. CMHC supports the Canadian housing industry and improves the living conditions of Canadians through mortgage loan insurance and securitization, assisted housing, research and information transfer and the promotion of Canadian housing exports.
