OTTAWA, Ontario, August 17, 2005 — The Honourable Joe Fontana, Minister of Labour and Housing, while traveling in Nunavut, announced today the creation of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Northern Housing. In order to better serve its partners, clients and stakeholders in the North, CMHC has centralized support to the three northern territories through its regional office located in Calgary.
"This move reinforces the Government of Canada's commitment to the North," said Minister Fontana. "CMHC Northern Housing will manage the diverse and growing housing interests of the North and focus on unique challenges bringing innovative housing building solutions."
Effective July 1, CMHC Northern Housing is responsible for all three territories and will be supported by the existing CMHC office in Whitehorse and corporate representation in both Yellowknife and Iqaluit.
Bringing focus to northern issues will be the newly appointed Manager, CMHC Northern Housing, Tom Kerwin. Tom has many years of experience with CMHC in a variety of roles. He has taken on assignments that run along the housing continuum including: research, housing innovation, technical policy, and assisted housing.
Minister Fontana's trip to Nunavut will include stops in Rankin Inlet, Chesterfield Inlet and Whale Cove where he will tour the community and meet with the Local Housing Associations. The Minister will also be meeting with the Honourable Olayuk Akesuk Minister of Environment, Minister Responsible for the Workers Compensation Board and Minister Responsible for Nunavut Housing to conclude his trip.
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) is Canada's national housing agency. For close to 60 years, CMHC has been contributing to improving the living conditions and the well-being of Canadians through four areas of housing activities — housing finance, assisted housing, research and information transfer, and export promotion. CMHC is committed to helping Canadians access a wide choice of quality, affordable homes, and making vibrant and sustainable communities and cities a reality across the country.
