40 Social Housing Units in the Borough of Boucherville, in Longueuil

LONGUEUIL, Québec, September 26, 2005 — Low-income individuals in the area now have more options thanks to the reconstruction of Place Saint-Louis, which is providing 40 brand new social housing units at 125 Du Puits Street, in the borough of Boucherville, in Longueuil.

This announcement was made today by the Honourable Jacques Saada, Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec and Minister responsible for the Francophonie, on behalf of the Honourable Joe Fontana, Minister of Labour and Housing, and by Pierre Moreau, MNA for Marguerite-d’Youville, on behalf of Nathalie Normandeau, Minister of Municipal Affairs and the Regions. In addition to Pierre Moreau, Manon D. Héneault, Chair of the Longueuil Municipal Housing Bureau, was present at the ceremony.

The reconstruction of the Place Saint-Louis housing project, which required investments of $3,307,725, was completed thanks to the participation of public and private partners. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation provided a sum of $1,653,863. The Government of Quebec, for its part, granted an amount of $1,323,090, through the Société d’habitation du Québec, while the municipality of Longueuil invested $330,772.

"The Government of Canada is pleased to work with the province, the municipality, and community sector representatives to meet the housing needs of the citizens of Longueuil," said Minister Saada. "Social housing units are a source of individual and collective pride. They enhance quality of life, stimulate commercial investment and contribute to the sustainable development of communities."

"The development of these 40 social housing units represents a concrete gesture to enable low-income families and individuals to benefit from adequate housing. As well, this project is an example of a successful partnership between governments and the community sector," said Pierre Moreau.

This reconstruction project was completed under the federal-provincial program for public low-rent housing.
