Experts Discuss Accessibility at London Forum

LONDON, Ontario, April 26, 2006 — Accessibility and housing experts came together today at a forum in London to raise awareness of the need for accessible buildings and housing.

Participants attending the Accessibility Forum learned about the role municipal governments play, as well as the accessibility design standards, building concepts, legislation, accessibility modifications and funding programs that exist to help people with decreased abilities due to aging, injury or disabilities.

The event was the result of a partnership between the City of London, the London Accessibility Advisory Committee and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

"As a city, our ultimate goal is to serve as a fine example of inclusivity, by providing barrier-free accessibility standards for all new and renovated City property," says Mayor Anne Marie DeCicco. "And, as our city continues to grow, we must ensure ongoing building plans include a full complement of accessible housing, so the needs of all Londoners are met. That is why this Forum promises to be such a success."

"Accessible housing is becoming a pressing issue for an increasing number of Canadians," said Peter Friedmann, General Manager, Ontario Business Centre, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. "CMHC has solid research on accessibility issues, and the strength of this Forum is working with our partners to share this information with the community."
