Nearly $12 Million Approved for New Affordable Housing ProjectsEDMONTON, Alberta, August 24, 2006 — Albertans in Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray and High Prairie will have access to 150 new affordable housing units, thanks to almost $12 million in funding allocated under phase two of the Canada – Alberta Affordable Housing Program. The Canada – Alberta Affordable Housing Program assists in the creation of sustainable rental housing for low- to moderate-income Albertans, through the construction of new or renovated affordable housing units. Phase two of this program will commit at least $63 million over two years to affordable housing projects in Alberta. Costs are shared equally by the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta. “The funding announced today will help bring affordable housing within reach for many more families and individuals in Alberta,” said the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development. “Canada’s new Government is proud to work in collaboration with the province of Alberta to support this most important initiative.” Phase two funding will be targeted to centres with considerable housing needs, and for persons on, or eligible to be on, waiting lists for social housing. So far $31 million in projects have been committed and/or announced, by the federal and provincial governments for the development of 319 affordable housing units under this phase of the program. It is estimated that over 400 affordable housing units will be developed using phase two funding. “Through phase two of the Canada – Alberta Affordable Housing Program, the Government of Alberta is focusing on current housing needs and responding to the unprecedented growth that is occurring throughout the province,” said the Honourable Yvonne Fritz, Minister of Seniors and Community Supports. “In doing so, we are assisting many low-income Albertans to have a safe and affordable place to call home.” A total of $134 million was invested to support the development of 2,886 housing units during phase one of the Canada – Alberta Affordable Housing Program.
