8 New Affordable Housing Units for Saint-Leonard

SAINT-LEONARD, Québec, March 30, 2006 — The Government of Canada and the Province of New Brunswick announced today a contribution of $520,000 for Foyer Notre Dame de Saint-Léonard Inc, a new eight unit affordable housing project for seniors. Located on 604, Principale Street, Foyer Notre Dame de Saint-Léonard is the 25th project to be announced for funding under the Canada-New Brunswick Affordable Housing Agreement. These projects represent a total of 436 new construction housing units in New Brunswick, involving 298 new rent supplement units.

Mike Allen, Member of Parliament for Tobique-Mactaquac, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, and the Honourable Madeleine Dubé, Minister of Family and Community Services, made the announcement today.

The Canada-New Brunswick Affordable Housing Agreement involves investments of over $45 million in the creation of affordable housing units in New Brunswick.

"The Government of Canada is committed to teaming up with our partners to help seniors gain access to affordable housing in New Brunswick," said Mr. Allen. "Units such as these make it possible for seniors to remain close to their families and friends, and allows them to remain active in their communities."

"We are pleased to join our partners in this project that will help improve the quality of life for seniors," Dubé said. "This project shows the advantage of creating partnerships with non-profit organizations to help meet the need for affordable housing in New Brunswick."

The project will receive $200,000 in federal funding to offset the construction costs totalling $854,100, as well as $320,000 in rent supplements from the Province of New Brunswick for all of the eight units.

The new housing complex for seniors will be built adjacent and connected to the nursing home Foyer Notre Dame de Saint-Léonard Inc. It involves one two-bedroom unit and seven one-bedroom units. One of which will be adapted for disabled persons and several facilities such as common room, laundry room and storage rooms.
