Minister Solberg Announces Call for Entries for CMHC Award to Recognize Excellence in Housing Studies

OTTAWA, Ontario, March 12, 2007 — The Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) today launched a call for entries to the 2007 CMHC Housing Studies Achievement Award. Up to six prizes of $10,000 — three for Doctoral theses and three for Master’s work — will be awarded every two years to students who are studying in fields related to housing.

“This award program will recognize excellence in academic work that contributes to the understanding and advancement of housing in Canada,” said Minister Solberg. “It complements CMHC’s work in housing innovation such as our recent EQuilibrium housing competition aimed at encouraging the building of sustainable, energy-efficient housing in Canada.”

The CMHC Housing Studies Achievement Award was created last year during the celebration of CMHC’s 60th anniversary of helping to house Canadians. Canadian Doctoral or Master’s students studying anywhere in the world will be eligible to submit their thesis or major research paper dealing with housing in any discipline (economic, social, design or technical). The awards will be presented at a ceremony to be held in Ottawa on November 6, 2007.

Candidates must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. The thesis or major research paper must have been completed and accepted by the School of Graduate Studies (at any accredited university in Canada or abroad) between April 30, 2005 and April 30, 2007. Applications must be received by 2 p.m. local Ottawa time on May 18, 2007. Download the Guidelines and Application form from www.cmhc.ca (search keyword: HSAA) or order a hard copy via e-mail to callcent@cmhc.ca or call 1-800-668-2642.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) has been Canada's national housing agency for more than 60 years. CMHC is committed to helping Canadians access a wide choice of quality, affordable homes, while making vibrant, healthy communities and cities a reality across the country.
