Construction to Begin on New Affordable Housing in Inglewood

CALGARY, Alberta, June 28, 2007 — A sod-turning event was held today for a new building that will provide housing for low-income families and physically and mentally challenged individuals in Calgary. Representatives of Canada’s New Government, the Government of Alberta, The City of Calgary, Calgary Homeless Foundation, Calgary Home Builders Foundation and Horizon Housing Society all came together at the event to celebrate the beginning of construction of the 114-unit Inglewood Residence.

“Canada's New Government is working to ensure funding is available for projects like these that address the need for affordable housing in communities across the country,” said the Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development and Member of Parliament for Medicine Hat. “We are pleased to be working with our partners in both the public and private sector to help those individuals and families in Calgary who are working towards building a better and stronger future.”

Funding for the $19.6 million project includes $12.3 million from the federal and provincial governments under the Canada – Alberta Affordable Housing Program, $2 million (lease of land) from the City of Calgary, $4 million from the Calgary Homeless Foundation through private sector fundraising, $1 million from the Calgary Home Builders Foundation, $250,000 from Alberta Gaming and $200,000 from Horizon Housing Society.

“This project will provide safe and affordable housing for low-income Albertans and those with special needs,” said Ray Danyluk, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “This project reflects this government’s commitment to work with our partners to increase the supply and access to affordable housing in Calgary and throughout the province.”

“The Inglewood Residence is a win-win-win project for low-income households, this community, and Calgary,” said Mayor Dave Bronconnier. “New residents in Inglewood will be supporting local schools, businesses and community services. I am very pleased to support this initiative.”

“The Inglewood Residence exemplifies the great work that can be accomplished when we match funds from the private sector with government contributions,” said Brian O’Leary, Chair of the Calgary Homeless Foundation. “Through these partnerships we are building a better city for all Calgarians.”

“The Inglewood Residence illustrates the commitment shown by the Calgary Home Builders Foundation to provide shelter for the most vulnerable members of our community,” said Bill McFarlane, President of the Calgary Home Builders Foundation. “Along with our partners, The Calgary Homeless Foundation, Horizon Housing Society and all three levels of government, we are proud to take the next step in making this much needed facility a reality.”

Horizon Housing Society will operate and manage the units. “The Inglewood Residence is a critically important affordable housing initiative.” said Lydia Lytwyn, President of Horizon Housing Society. “The Society is proud to be a partner in its development and is grateful to the other contributing partners for their tremendous commitment to the development of affordable housing for people in need.”

Completion of construction of the Inglewood Residence is anticipated for late 2008.
