Three Affordable Housing Projects Open in Waterloo Region

KITCHENER, Ontario, May 22, 2008 — Three new affordable housing projects in Waterloo Region, which will create a total of 166 affordable housing units under the Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program, were officially opened today by the Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario, and the Region of Waterloo.

Gary Goodyear, Member of Parliament for Cambridge, on behalf of the Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development; the Honourable John Milloy, Member of Provincial Parliament for Kitchener Centre, on behalf of the Honourable Jim Watson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing; and Waterloo Regional Chair Ken Seiling, attended the ceremony.

“The Government of Canada is committed to making affordable housing available in Ontario and across Canada for those who need it most,” said MP Goodyear. “Projects like these will help low-income families, seniors and individuals in Waterloo Region access safe, affordable and quality housing, helping them to build a stronger future.”

“The McGuinty government believes that affordable housing should be part of the fabric of every community in Ontario,” said MPP Milloy. “Today’s projects have created new safe, healthy, and affordable housing opportunities for some of the most vulnerable households in the Waterloo Region, helping ensure they can live with dignity in the community.”

The three projects received more than $6.3 million from the Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program, including:

  • $1.2 million for 42 units at 1021 Queenston Road in Cambridge, developed by Victoria Park Homes Ltd.
  • $2.5 million for 54 units at 35 Water Street South in Cambridge, developed by Lancer Tiger Lofts Corporation.
  • $2.6 million for 70 units at 274 Erb Street West in Waterloo, developed by Maple Hill Creek Apartments Inc.

“Waterloo Region’s success since 2001 in building affordable housing is proof positive that partnerships work”, said Ken Seiling, Regional Chair. “With these latest projects, approximately 1,400 units of affordable housing have been added to our supply. We look forward to continuing to work with our Federal, Provincial and community partners to meet the need for housing in Waterloo Region."

The federal and provincial allocation was complemented by more than $3.3 million in municipal financial incentives.

The Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program comprises a commitment of $301 million from each of the two senior levels of government. In total, the federal, provincial and municipal governments will invest at least $734 million in the program, which will provide affordable housing for 20,000 households in Ontario.
