Government of Canada Celebrates Canada Day at Granville IslandVANCOUVER, British Columbia, July 01, 2009 — The Honorable Senator Gerry St. Germain, representing Langley – Pemberton – Whistler, on behalf on the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, celebrated Canada Day today at Granville Island — one of Vancouver’s top cultural and tourist destinations. The occasion also marked the 30th anniversary of Granville Island, which was redeveloped from an industrial park in the late 1970’s to become one of the most successful waterfront developments in North America. “Today’s Canada Day festivities bring together Canadians from coast-to-coast to celebrate all of the things that make this country one of the best places in the world to live,” said Senator St. Germain. “This is a special Canada Day celebration given that it is also Granville Island’s 30th anniversary.” As part of the festivities, Granville Island visitors enjoyed free jazz performances courtesy of the Coastal Jazz and Blues Society, a Truly Canadian Pancake Breakfast at Dockside Restaurant, the 10th annual Canada Day Parade, as well as many local and international performers celebrating Canada’s cultural diversity. Granville Island, one of the first brownfield redevelopments by the federal government, is a sustainable community in the heart of Vancouver accessible by foot, bike, water and public transit. It houses more than 275 businesses, studios and facilities, and employs some 2,500 people. Granville Island is managed by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).
